Offering clear, objective data to help patients make informed decisions.
This website was made by medical students Graham Branscom and Leilei Hao under the mentorship of neurosurgeon John Y.K. Lee, MD.
This site helps patients compare how neurosurgeons perform specific procedures, based on publicly available Medicare data. You can search by name or ZIP code to see how a surgeon ranks for certain treatments.
The data comes from Medicare billing records published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). We collated procedure-level data for 6,116 neurosurgeons in the US.
We compare each surgeon’s procedure volume and billing history to others in the same ZIP code. From this, we calculate a percentile rank for each surgeon. This helps show how experienced a surgeon is with a given procedure compared to their local peers. Higher volumes tend to indicate better outcomes, but this is not always the case.
This website is based only on Medicare billing data and may does not include data from patients with private insurance or Medicaid.
Also, our data only includes procedure volumes and does not directly measure surgical outcomes or patient satisfaction.
